Gen Prawit joins ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting

BANGKOK (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan has represented Thailand at the 14th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) held via video conference. The meeting stressed the enhancement of cooperation in response to new threats and challenges.
The Deputy Prime Minister was representing the Minister of Defence at the 14th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) hosted by the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam in a video conference format, with Thai officials participating from the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Bangkok.
The Ministry of Defence Spokesman Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich said today the 14th ADMM had concluded successfully, with members sharing their views and discussing regional defence cooperation.
The participants on this occasion signed a draft joint declaration of ASEAN Defence Ministers on national defence cooperation, in which the defence ministers have shown their intention to enhance their solidarity, and the responses of ASEAN with changes in the region’s geostrategy and geopolitics by promoting military cooperation between member countries, as well as between ASEAN countries and partner countries, in order to address newer threats and challenges, while preserving ASEAN centrality, respect in each country’s sovereignty, and consensus.
The defence ministers endorsed the 2020-2022 working plan of the ADMM, as well as draft documents on cooperation and sustainability, namely the regulation on a Joint Task Force for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief; a regulation on a strategic information exchange on terrorism; a proposal on the flying of the ASEAN flag along with the flag of member countries participating in United Nations’ peace keeping missions; a proposal on enhancement of the connectivity between the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting and the ASEAB Chiefs of Defence Forces Meeting, and a proposal on promoting the role of assistant military attaches in ASEAN countries within the ADMM and ADMM Plus frameworks.
