ASEAN and UN aim for sustainable development

BANGKOK (NNT) - The meeting of 10 nations in ASEAN and the United Nations (UN) is part of this year’s ASEAN Summit. Thailand has proposed three keys to developing ASEAN society sustainably.
PM General Prayut Chan-O-Cha joined an ASEAN-UN meeting as part of the 11th ASEAN Summit in a video conference, along with 10 leaders and representatives of ASEAN country members including Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Vietnam’s PM as chair of this year summit and Mr. Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General.
The Vietnamese PM noted that the summit is being held to acknowledge and revise cooperation between ASEAN and the UN.
On the occasion, Thailand’s PM said that the United Nations is the pillar that supports the world’s peace, development, and problem-solving. He also praised the UN as it has changed its priorities to ensure supplies of anti COVID-19 medicines are publicly accessible where needed.
General Prayut also proposed three keys to maintaining regional development, comprising a re-prioritizing of cooperation by focusing on human security to ensure nations are able to stand up against any form of threat. Second, promoting volunteer missions in the region that help ASEAN members exchange knowledge and experience through existing mechanisms and centers for international cooperation. And third, promoting stronger ASEAN partnership and making a more serious response to problems.
After finishing his proposals, PM Prayut also stressed that Thailand always focuses on Multilateralism, takes Universal approaches, Promotes cooperation on the international stage, and pursues its intention to work even closer with ASEAN members and the UN.
Before the end of the meeting, the UN Secretary-General stressed that the UN’s missions are to support ASEAN’s development in all respects, as well as to help promote Thailand’s efforts with South-South Cooperation, the Leave No One Behind Policy, natural disaster prevention and mitigation, and other related matters.
