Army chief follows up on probe into attack on Lamphaya village defense unit

PATTANI (NNT) - Army chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong has visited the southern border region to follow the progress of the probe into the latest attack on a village defense unit, to step up security measures and express condolences to the families of the victims.

Gen Apirat evaluated the operations of southern border units at the Internal Security Operations Command’s Region 4 Forward Command. Fourth Army Commander Lt Gen Phornsak Phulsawat, security officials and the governors of three southern border provinces attended the meeting.

The army chief expressed condolences for the attack in Yala and ordered a tightening of security measures in targeted or weakert communities. The army chief also instructed government officials to do their best and adhere to the principles of knowledge, access and development laid out by the late King Rama IX.

Police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda visited Yala and followed up on the police investigation into the attack on the Lamphaya village defense unit. The police chief assured no scape goats will be arrested and called on local villagers to have confidence in the authorities’ security measures for public peace and order.

The police chief instructed all policemen serving in the area to be ready for action and offered them moral support. He instructed the police to arrest the suspected perpetrators and bring them to justice as soon as possible. He assured the police will continue to protect the lives and property of local villagers, be they Buddhist or Muslim.
