APEC Health Ministerial Meeting highlights health system investment27 Aug 2022
BANGKOK (NNT) - The 12th APEC’s High-Level Meeting on Health and Economy has reached solutions for health and economy balance by focusing on health system investment, health security, and universal health coverage. Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul chaired a roundtable panel discussion under the theme ‘Open to Partnership, Connect with the world, Balance Health and Economy.’ The discussion focuses on health security for pandemic preparedness. Anutin Charnvirakul said that the impact of covid-19 has reflected the fact that the global community didn’t prepare for such an outbreak. The lack of financial investment to respond to the pandemic is part of the issue. To create health security, the meeting’s outcome emphasizes the importance of health and economy, investment in the health system, and universal health coverage. Vaccine development and digital health technology are also key elements to coping with unpredictable outbreaks in the future. In addition, APEC members have agreed to open borders with safe passage, together with enhancing cooperation with the private sector, elevating living conditions in the Asia-Pacific region, and sharing vaccine technology.

Safety, Security, Sustainability highlighted at APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting27 Aug 2022
BANGKOK (NNT) - The APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting took place in a virtual format on Friday. Thailand, as the host country, presented policies on food security, affirming its preparedness to drive forward the Food Security Roadmap Towards 2030. The 7th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting (FSMM) took place on Friday in a virtual format, hosted by Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Sri-on said after the meeting that Thailand, as the host country, has declared its objectives to promote food security in the region through a set of policies, covering food safety and trade facilitation, life quality improvement, natural resource sustainability, the promotion of innovation and technology in the food and agricultural sector, and the creation of balance in the economy, society, and the environment. APEC last year introduced the Food Security Roadmap Towards 2030 (Roadmap 2030), which is aimed to create an open, fair, transparent, productive, sustainable, and resilient APEC food system. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives highlighted its efforts to drive forward this roadmap through its 3S: Safety, Security, and Sustainability policy. These efforts cover the promotion of food safety and nutrition, the promotion of technological implementations within the industry, and its Big Data integration on soil, irrigation, climate change, and diseases in plants and animals. The APEC Business Advisory Council provided recommendations for APEC economies to support trade facilitation and digital transformation, in line with the 2030 Roadmap. The council recommends member economies work with international organizations on food security issues, to reduce non-tax trade obstacles for farm and food products, and implement the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model. The Ministry of Agriculture laid out several policies surrounding the BCG model, technological implantation, and food security for the future. The ministry has set an objective for next year to better promote women’s roles as the main driving force for the country’s social and economic development, by promoting the roles and strength of farming housewife communities across the country.

ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases soft launched26 Aug 2022
BANGKOK (NNT) -The ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED) was soft launched today at the Bangrak Medical Centre to boost capacity of ASEAN in response with public health emergencies.The Centre serves as Secretariate Office a centre of excellence and regional resource centre for ASEAN State Members in prevention, detection and response to public health emergencies and emerging diseases. The center also serves to maintain close relations with stakeholders including the ASEAN Member States, other ASEAN organizations, partners and relevant agencies. The Soft Launching Ceremony took place today at the the Bangrak Medical Centre joined by Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand and the Minister of Public Health / Dato Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary- General of ASEAN / Public Health Ministers from ASEAN State Members and APEC member economies’ Ministers.The establishment of the centre was announced during 37th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in November 2020, via video conference following the COVID-19 pandemic; where ASEAN state members have agreed to join hands to build a safer resilience ASEAN Community. The establishment of the Centre to be established in Thailand was agreed during the Trilateral Meeting on ACPHEED in May,2022

U.S. praises Thailand’s COVID-19 response25 Aug 2022
BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand has received praises for its effective COVID-19 response and health security from the United States at the APEC meeting on health. The country has pledged to provide support in pursuit of global health security on laboratory systems and workforce development. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul held a bilateral discussion with the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Andrea Palm, as part of the APEC Health Week events in Bangkok. The U.S. Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services on this occasion congratulated Thailand for hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting this year, praising Thailand for its effective COVID-19 response in terms of medicine, treatment, and vaccine. Mrs. Palm admired the cooperation of Thai people on preventative measures such as mask wearing and physical distancing, and thanked Thailand for submitting data on the virus to the U.S. in the early days of the outbreak. The U.S. health official paid Thailand a compliment on its role in global health security. The country has been selected to host the ASEAN Center for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED), which is officially opening tomorrow. She also extended the invitation for Thailand to attend next year’s APEC High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy, which will be hosted by the United States. Thailand on this occasion thanked the United States for the assistance, particularly on the donation of mRNA vaccines in millions of doses. Thailand, as a member of the Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA), pledged to support the work of the organization in the areas of laboratory systems and workforce development, which are two of the GHSA’s action packages. The United States asked Thailand to support vaccinations for children along the Thailand-Myanmar borders. Thailand has been working with international organizations to establish a cooperation plan on public health with Myanmar.

Malaysian Health Minister observes Thailand mental health hospital operations25 Aug 2022
BANGKOK (NNT) - Malaysia’s Minister of Health has observed the operations of Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, a mental health facility in Bangkok. This visit is a part of the effort to tighten Thailand-Malaysia cooperation on mental health services. Malaysian Minister of Health Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar led a group of officials to observe the operations and services provided at Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry in Bangkok. His visit was welcomed by Dr. Amporn Benjaponpithak, Director General of Thailand’s Department of Mental Health. Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry is a facility that provides mental health services to all. The institute provides treatment for diseases caused by substance abuse, mental illness, depression, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The facility also provides help to those with suicidal thoughts. The Malaysian health minister on this visit observed the institute’s neurocognitive clinic for dementia patients, a mental health clinic for children and teenagers, and the brain and mind rehabilitation center. He then observed the operations of the Red Roof and Friends cafes, where mental health patients can learn, practice, and improve their social skills. These coffee shops are Thailand’s first social enterprises for mental health patients that aim to help assist their reintegration into society with good quality of life. The visit from the Malaysian health minister is a part of the effort to enhance the cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia on mental health, enabling healthcare professionals in both countries to further improve their capacities in the field of psychiatry

Vaccine security tops agenda at APEC Health Week25 Aug 2022
BANGKOK (NNT) - The topic of vaccine security is the main discussion point of the Health Working Group at the APEC Health Week meetings. Participants believe vaccine security will contribute to economic security among member states.Members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) are taking part in the APEC Health Week meetings, where the topic of vaccine security is among the main subjects discussed. Health officials from Thailand have presented outcomes from its vaccination campaigns over the past 20 years, covering vaccinations against Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Acellular Pertussis; as well as the ongoing rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.The meeting underscored the One Health concept which calls for a collective effort from all 21 member economies to enhance their capacity in disease control and ensure preparedness for public health emergencies and emerging diseases.Exhibitions on health and medical knowledge are now being held to accompany the meetings, including an exhibition on Thai massage which has been designated as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).There are also presentations about health services that promote Thailand as a medical tourism destination and help position the country as a hub for medical services and health products.
