BANGKOK

Global warming is the natural phenomenon that occurs from massive greenhouse gases emitting and blanketing the Earth’s atmosphere. It results in an increased worldwide temperature. Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), and Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) are examples of Greenhouse Gases.

Four activities that emit toxic gas are as follows:

           - Fossil fuel burning up in power plant

          - Production process and transportation

          - Industrial sector

          - Agriculture sector

United Nations estimates that in the next 10-50 years, the global temperature will be rising at approximately 2-4 degrees Celsius and sea level rising 20-50 centimeters, while the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s data indicates that Bangkok’s lowest temperature has increased for 2 degrees Celsius.

The "C-40 last 60" Climate Summit in New York, USA, which was held on 14-17 May 2007, was the first major summit with objective to discuss about Global Warming crisis. Mr. Apirak Kosayodhin, then Bangkok governor, was a representative from Thailand and Bangkok has hosted one of the largest campaigns on reducing Global Warming in Thailand on May 9, 2007. The “Bangkok Agreement on Jointly Reducing Global Warming” has been announced. Such activities as “Switch Off for 15 Minutes For Our Bangkok” campaign was moderately successful. While “turning off electricity for 15 minutes could save more than 30 Kilowatts while decreasing 530 Kilowatts for all day long” is another such campaign.
