Creative Thailand
The year 2010 has been adopted by the Thai Government as the Creative Economy Year, as proposed by the Commerce Ministry at the final Cabinet meeting of the year 2009. It is part of the plan to promote Thai creative businesses. The plan is also aimed at encouraging businesspeople to engage more in intellectual property rights protection.
Under the Creative Economy Year concept, the goal is to increase the value of creative industry to 20 percent of gross domestic product in the next three years. The Ministry also hopes to make Thailand the center for creative industry in ASEAN. The Board of Investment will give a special push to promoting creative industry in relation to this goal.
The creative industries refer to a range of economic activities which are concerned with the generation or exploitation of knowledge and information. They may variously also be referred to as the cultural industries or the creative economy. One theory says creative economy comprises advertising, architecture, art, crafts, design, fashion, film, music, performing art, publishing, R&D, software, toys and games, TV and radio and video games (Howkins 2001 p.88-117)
