Honesty is the basis of all goodness. Children must therefore try to build up that quality and grow up as good and useful people and to lead a life that is pure and prosperous.
Chitralada Villa, 18 November B.E. 2530 (1987)
If we are moderate in our demands, we will have less greed and will cause less trouble to others. If we stick to the principle, that is be moderate, honest and not too greedy, we will live happily.

Islam is a religion widely respected for the complete teachings both in religious provisions and social disciplines which enable Muslim people to live happily in honesty and stability. Those who properly disseminate the great teachings are religious leaders of various levels, especially the Imams. This is why they are looked up to as important and honorable persons by the government sector and the general public.

If Buddhists know the religious principles and follow them properly, Buddhism will be more stable. This is because the undermining of Buddhism comes mostly from Buddhists who do not understand and do not follow the religious principles.

All the ancient artifacts, art objects and remains are valuable. They should be studied and researched because they illustrate the nation’s prosperity in the past. They should be preserved to be permanent national treasures.

Next year, they say, will be a critical year; it will be critical every year if they say so. Today will be a critical day if we believe blindly in astrology and only wait for the auspicious time to come and for the catastrophic time, the deadly time, the hostile time to pass. The astrologer may say that the good stars will be eclipsed and the bad stars will make a big scene. This will result in our destruction, and there will be a great disaster. If it is blindly believed, the worst may really happen.

I have mentioned that “baramee” is doing good deeds. It is comparable to banking. …if we use more than we have in the account… the bank might let us overdraw for some time, but if we over do it, the banker will have us declared bankrupt. In the same way, we should not overdraw from the “baramee” account that our ancestors have amassed since ancient times. We must do our part in accumulating “baramee”, to guarantee the nation’s safe future.

Creativity is generally thought of as creating something new. Academics and practitioners aim to do so, regardless of existing progress in other innovations. They try to start something new to gain glory for themselves. Progress, which should advance steadily, is therefore interrupted and becomes delayed with obstacles, leading to numerous difficulties. This is because the new work is begun in isolation and takes no account of previous research. It must be correctly understood that each new advance begins with study of earlier discoveries.

Progress is a result of several factors. Good technology must be used with justice and honesty, both in thought and practice; wisdom on real knowledge of cause and effect, of prosperity and decline; hard work, attentive to detail and thorough research.

Village scouts are an important factor in establishing the progress of our nation. Training that is conducted in accordance with correct village scout rules and methods will enhance each person’s worth, whether adult of child. The strength, patience, diligence, generosity, vigilance and discipline gained from the training all contribute to self-reliance and creativities, benefiting the whole nation.

Peach is a prerequisit for Thailand becoming a golden land because without peace, problems cannot be solved. Nor can we concentrate our efforts on self-dependency. Peace practically means normal day-to-day living with no chaos, no conflicts, no disturbance and no injuries. Inner peace means a stable mind without thoughts of anxiety, greed, selfishness and ambitious desire. To establish peace in the country we should start with an inner physical and mental peace.

At present science and technology are the keys to national development. We should therefore promote invention of our own technology as appropriate to the environment and the demands of the nation. The more we invent, the wider the technology will benefit various work and save us money on importing foreign technology.

Some people say that a Royal Project cannot be touched. This is a mistaken view, or a view that is not quite right. If a Royal Project cannot be commented on, Thailand cannot develop. A Royal Project is a Royal Opinion. If a Royal Opinion cannot be touched, it would mean that Thailand cannot progress… That is way I have told the people concerned with the construction of the new dam that I have given the permission to dismantle the original Royal Project so that everyone will be at ease; otherwise, there could be talk of lese majeste, or something in that vein.

This is a period of decline, it seems. People complain a lot; they complain that the traffic is extremely congested. …In fact, the solution has been under study for a long time already. But the difficulty resides in the fact that the solution cannot keep in stride with the problem. That is 50 per cent has been solved, the problem grows to 60 per cent meaning a loss of 10 per cent. That is quite normal but it does not mean that we are defeated. We must strive to solve the ten per cent lost, otherwise the problems will snowball until they are insoluble.

Investment in business are based on calculation of profit and returns to repay the loan. Sometimes the loans can be repaid but they are not because, in economic affairs, any company or any business that is not in debt, is not good business; a company must be in debt to make good business. This is the economic theory.

Mother used to tell me, quite some time ago, at least ten years ago; she said, “This mother of yours was born a long time ago, so I am old.” …But I told here, “To be old is good; the longer you live, the better it is for us because our parents’ longevity will be an encouragement for the children. If we have a mother who lives a long life, we will also live a long life. If we have a healthy mother, we will also be healthy.”

Is water beneficial or harmful? The truth is that water, or anything in this wide world is, by nature, both good and band. If we make good use of it, it will be beneficial. If we misuse it, it will be harmful.

Books are a crucial component of one’s progress because from birth, man has to learn and practice physically and mentally in order to become capable and gain knowledge to lead his life. Humans are different from all the other animals in that they have far superior intellects, thoughts and brains.

We, the Thai people, are all fully conscious of the various burden ad responsibilities weighing upon us which need to be relieved and fulfilled in order to build and promote national security, progress and prosperity. In doing so, we have always steadfastly adhered to the principle that we must first of all try to help ourselves according to our own ways, and we have endeavoured to undertake the task to the best of our ability and within the limits or our own resources and capabilities.

We are not a very rich country, but we get along. We are not one of those countries that are very advanced and we do not want to be one of those very advanced countries, because if we are a highly advanced country, there is only one way to go : backwards. Mind you, those highly industrialized countries are bound to go down, and down in a very dangerous way. On the other hand, if we use a “poor man’s” method of administration, without being too dogmatic about theory, but with the spirit of Unity in mind, that is, with mutual tolerance, we will have more stability.

…anyone, be it bureaucrats, businessmen, the people at large, or everyone who considers himself a Thai, should develop a little clear, sharp thinking. Just stop and ponder a little is enough. That is, when any problem arises, instead of immediately opening the mouth to speak, we should stop to think a moment. And we will not make a mistake. … I call on you to stop and think because we see what is happening all over the world, these sad happenings. If Thailand, for one, would be a peaceful country, that would be great.

Constructive thinking means thinking honestly, with understanding, with a cool head and without too much self-interest. It must be done in the interest of the nation, or at least for the community. To have discussions is not forbidden; there must be discussions. It must be done with reason, with the knowledge that any cause is bound to have effects.

If we have a well defined goal, any problem can be very easily solved. Furthermore, when saying anything, one must say it simply, factually and to the point. Usually present times individuals don’t get any result from their actions. For one thing, it is because each individual speaks in his own way, invoking inconsistent premises. In the end, the obstinate, dogmatic one will win the argument, but that is not good; that is not right.

“Unity” or “Solidarity” does not mean that if someone says something, others must invariably agree. In the end, life would have no meaning. There must be some differences. On the other hand, work must be done in harmony. Even though there are some differences, there must be harmony. Without harmony, everything will crumble down.

…for the sake of unity and solidarity, everyone must know what should be said and what should not be said. Or if one has said something. One should acknowledge that one has said it. If one has made a mistake, one must also admit it. One must not maintain doggedly that one was right, saying “I am right, I am right, I am right!” knowing eventually in one’s heart that one is wrong. This is a subject that I have to mention because if it remains like this, our society will crumble down.

In each one’s life, there are moments of happiness as well as moments of sorrow. This also applies to the life of a nation; sometimes there is happiness; sometimes there is sorrow. Let it not, however, be too excess. Even too much happiness can have negative effects on one’s well-being. On the other hand, with too much sorrow, life can become unbearable; one becomes discouraged and may succumb to it in the end.

We have people who are not of the same opinion; there are some disputes which, at times, can become heated arguments. But the bottom line is that we are all Thai people; when it comes to preserving the country or to assisting the people who are, after all, the nation, we all must help each other.

If we foster good intentions and efforts, not merely lip service but really good actions, that is, doing constructive things, god things and actions that are not detrimental to others, for both material and spiritual prosperity, we do not have to fear anything… because a man of integrity, even in the face of death, will be fearless because he will die well. A good death means a glorious end, and the one who dies well will have no worry; he has had an honest life.
