BANGKOK (NNT) - The Deputy Minister of the Interior has urged the provinces and disaster prevention and mitigation offices nationwide, to survey reserve water resources. It is expected that the drought crisis this year will be more severe than in 2015.

Mr Niphon Bunyamanee, Deputy Minister of the Interior, has instructed the provinces and disaster prevention and mitigation offices nationwide to assess water resources available for the production of tap water, before the arrival of the rainy season. This follows a report on the water situation which is likely to become critical this year.

As for brackish tap water being found in certain areas, it is caused by natural phenomena during the tidal current, but will only be a problem at certain times. The Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) has tried to solve the problem without stopping tap water production. Therefore, it may mean water continues to taste somewhat brackish. However, the MWA has installed RO water filters at its 10 branches in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, Nonthaburi and parts of the boundary of Pathum Thani. There is also a bigger project designed to solve the problem in the long run, by channeling water from West to East.
