BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ombudsman Office of Thailand is slated to host an international seminar to celebrate its 20th anniversary of its establishment. The event will be taken part by ombudsmen from around the globe.
Thailand’s Chief Ombudsman Gen. Viddhavat Rajatanun said the “International Seminar Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Thai Ombudsman” will be held from February 10th to the 14th, ahead of the 12th World Conference and General Assembly of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) which will take place in Dublin, Ireland between May 17 and May 22 May, this year.
Gen. Viddhavat noted the February’s seminar will be inaugurated by Thailand’s House Speaker Chuan Leekpai and will result in the signing of the Memorandum of Intent of the South East Asian Ombudsman Forum (SEAOF) between Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.
The theme of this seminar is "Ombudsman in a Changing World : Resilience Amidst Challenges," which strives to protect people from unfair practices.
In Thailand, the term “Ombudsman” was first mentioned in the parliamentary system in 1975 by the Constitutional Drafting Assembly.
The forthcoming seminar will also prepare the Thai Ombudsman Office for its attendance at the 12th IOI World Conference which will be organized on the theme “Giving Voice to the Voiceless,” with a focus on international best practices in working with groups of people who have difficulties in accessing Ombudsman services, but who are often most in need of the IOI’s interventions.
