BANGKOK, 23 May 2019 (NNT) - The opening of parliament will take place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday (May 24). After parliament has officially convened, the House of Representatives will hold a meeting to select the House speaker and deputies the following day.
The acting House speaker of the first meeting will be former House speaker Chai Chidchob, a 91-year-old MP from the Bhumjaithai Party. The venue of this meeting is at the TOT Headquarters. The meeting to select the House speaker and deputies should take about six hours, and the voting will be conducted by secret ballot. Mr. Chai expressed confidence that the meeting will be orderly.
During the selection process, each MP will cast a secret vote by writing the name of a candidate on a piece and paper and put it in an envelope. If only one candidate is nominated by MPs, that individual will automatically become the House speaker. If there is a contest, an MP must receive the support of at least 20 fellow House members to be a House speaker candidate. A secret ballot will then be organized, and the candidate with the most votes will be named House speaker. A five-member vote-counting committee has been set up, comprising representatives from five major parties, namely the Bhumjaithai, Democrat, Future Forward, Pheu Thai, and Palang Pracharath parties.
