BANGKOK, 16 April 2019 (NNT) - Individual shrimp farmers have been facing low sea shrimp pricing since 2018 from excessive global shrimp supply. The Department of Fisheries Director General Adisorn Promthep has confirmed the department is finding measures to help affected farmers, and will be introducing a helping campaign on 1 May.
The campaign, which will run for three years between 2019-2021, in focused on the enhancement of manufacturing capacity and marketing for sea shrimp products for domestic consumption.
The Department of Fisheries will offer financial support for the purchase of disease-free young whiteleg shrimp supply at 90% of the price, or 0.135 baht per shrimp per person with the cap at 40,000 baht per person. Offering subsidy for loan interest with the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) at 3% for the purchase of necessary farming equipment once a year for a maximum period of 3 years and a maximum credit at 300,000 baht per person o n the first year, and 150,000 baht per person per year on the second and third year. And offering BAAC loan interest subsidy at 3% for farming institutes and community enterprises nationwide once a year for a maximum period of 3 years, with the maximum credit offered at up to 2 million baht per organization on the first year, and up to 1 million baht on the second and third year.
The Department of Fisheries will be opening application for this campaign by white shrimp breeders, community farming enterprises, and farmer groups from 1 May to 31 July at local Department of Fisheries offices nationwide. Eligible farmers must apply at the office in their area. This campaign is also aimed to help strengthen farming organizations.
