BANGKOK, 15 April 2019 (NNT) - Celebrations of Songkran in Chiang Mai this year have seen popular areas crowded with Thai and international visitors coming out to splash water along the city moat and at Tha Phae gate.
The atmosphere of the Songkran festival this year in Chiang Mai is vibrant with many villagers and tourists joining the water splashing activities, especially around the city moat and Tha Phae gate, where many of the tourists are groups of Chinese visitors. Thai locals are also celebrating by driving pick-up trucks carrying water and splashing others along the roadway around the city moat, amidst high heat.
A traditional Thai New Year ceremony in Lanna style is also being held at Tha Phae gate, featuring a parade and contest of ladies riding three-wheeled bikes, which is part of the cultural identity of Chiang Mai’s Songkran festival. Many more cultural activities are also taking place such the parade of the Phra Phutta Sihing Buddha statue and important Buddha statues from temples in the province, allowing visitors and villagers to bathe the Buddha images for their good fortune according to the traditional Lanna beliefs.
