Convicted drunk drivers join social services during Songkran festival

BANGKOK, 14th April 2019 (NNT) - The Department of Probation has taken intensive measures to order drunk drivers to assist social service workers at checkpoints and service points.

Probation Department Director General Prasarn Mahaleetrakul has disclosed that on April 12, the courts were closed in many areas and only three reckless driving case and 31 drunk driving cases entered the probation process.

On April 11-12, 2019, the courts ordered 441 drunk driving cases and nine reckless driving cases to enter the probation process. The provinces with the highest number of drunk driving cases are Maha Sarakham, Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani.

The Department of Probation has also assigned probation offices to order the probationers from drunk driving cases to attend social service work as a supporter of the operation of volunteers at community checkpoints or public service points, in accordance with the guidelines of the integrated road accident prevention and reduction plan during Songkran festival 2019 to raise road safety awareness.
