BANGKOK, 14 April 2019 (NNT) - His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch granted an audience to members of the public who offered water and asked for his blessings on the occasion of the Thai New Year, or Songkran.
On Saturday (Apr 13), the Supreme Patriarch proceeded to Ratchabophit Sathit Maha Simaram Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan temple in Phra Nakhon district of Bangkok to grant an audience to the general public on the first day of Songkran. A large crowd of people visited the temple to receive blessings from the Supreme Patriarch on this auspicious occasion. The activity was aimed at preserving Thai culture and traditions.
The Supreme Patriarch delivered a lecture on the occasion of the Songkran festival, saying “Songkran is a festival where people show their kindness through displays of physical and verbal affection. Younger people show respect to the elderly, while the latter show them genuine kindness and courtesy in response. This is a beautiful Thai tradition that everyone of us must preserve. Everyone of us has a duty. A monk has a duty to practice dharma. A civil servant has to abide by principles and morality. A civilian also has a role in society. I would like everyone to be fully aware of one’s role and avoid wrongful acts. We can remind ourselves that we cannot succeed without the support of our colleagues and friends in our society. Therefore, have mercy and show kindness to one another to achieve and maintain happiness and success."
