BANGKOK, 09 February 2019, (NNT) - His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn has released a statement on the Royal Government Gazette, announcing that Princess Ubolratana’s bid for the premiership is inappropriate and unconstitutional.

The statement said the involvement of a high-ranking member of the royal family in politics, in whatever way, is an act that conflicts with the country’s traditions, customs, and culture, and therefore is considered extremely inappropriate.

According to the statement, the principle applies to the Queen, the heir to the throne, and all members of the Royal Family, including Princess Ubolratana despite relinquishing her royal title in 1972.

The rare move from the monarchy came after the Thai Raksa Chart Party made a controversial decision to propose Princess Ubolratana, the eldest child of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and the elder sister of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, as its sole prime ministerial candidate.
