BANGKOK, 31 July 2010 (NNT) – Thai education potential is unacceptable when compared with the international standard, and several aspects need to be developed such as opportunity, quality and management efficacy, according to Mr Thongtong Chantarangsu, the Secretary-General of the Education Council.
Following the comparison of Thai education potential to international standard in 2009 by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), education competency of Thailand is ranked 47th among 57 countries around the world, dropped from 2008 by four levels.
Mr Thongtong said that in the aspect of opportunity and equality in education, the rate of students in secondary school was 71%, ranked at 49th, a drop by three levels. Illiteracy rate of people aged 15 years upward declined to 5.9%, while Thai educational quality remained at number 42.
Furthermore, the achievement in higher education of people aged 25-34 showed that the rate of completion was 18%, or ranked 43rd among overall countries in comparison. Half of Thai students at 15 year-old got low grade in the test of Math and Science under the PISA project, while capacity in English usage among Thai children ranked at 51st from all 57 countries.
Mr Thongtong concluded that Thai education fell far behind other countries in opportunity provided, quality and management system. According to the research, the schooling system should promote the teaching English as the second language from elementary level including the third language. Also, educational standard needs to be enhanced in all aspects.
